Fourth graders have had another wonderful week learning and growing!
Social Studies
This week, students have embarked on a new social studies unit! Fourth graders are diving into researching the Cherokee Tribe and their history. The Cherokee study kicked off with students reading and analyzing some of the Tribe’s pourquoi stories. These tales have been passed down through generations via oral storytelling. Students loved not only getting to listen to creation stories like how the Milky Way was put into the sky, but also getting to act these stories out! Fourth graders are eager to gain understanding of another culture, and draw similarities and differences from other culture’s they’ve previously studied this year, like Greek Mythology!
Writing
Alongside learning about Cherokee beliefs and stories, students dove into the seven clans within the Tribe. The class is studying how to write literary essays exploring themes, characters, and symbolism. After exploring how each clan contributed to the entire Tribe, students have begun working on literary essays explaining which clan they think they’d make a good fit in, and why. Similarly, students reflect on these creation stories and find the meaning or lesson of the story. Fourth graders were then asked to write literary essays about their takeaway, providing text based evidence supporting their claim.
Math
In preparation for middle school, our fourth graders have started their geometry unit! In this unit, students are working on mastering their understanding of shapes, lines, and points. Students kicked it off with a partner activity, one partner describing a shape while the other tries to draw it. This activity helps students gain a better understanding of parts of shapes, angels, and polygons, as well as expanding their vocabulary of shape describing words. Students are gearing up to combine their previous knowledge of area and perimeter with their newfound understanding of shapes!
