Last Stretch

As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we want to celebrate the growth, achievements, and memories we’ve made together. Spring brings new energy—and our students are finishing strong! Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Some of our students wanted to share some of their favorite memories that have led up to Spring:

“Going to the climbing wall at JICP. Thomas Robinson helped me climb and it helped me overcome my fears.”- Tadeo

“All of the Carnivals!”- Harper P.

“Middle School Dance”- Laura

“Friends and ziplining”-Madeline

“Hanging out with my friends”-Catherine

“Meeting my new friends”- Thomas Robinson

“Cuddle puddle on TedEd rug”- Eveline

“Mass of number 2”- Gia

Happy Spring!

Math:

This week, 5th graders continued their final unit of study, starting off with multiplication and division review first, which was followed by applying these operations to complex volume problems this week. Next week, we’ll move into review the addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals.

ELA:

5th grade readers continued their reading of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, exploring the use of tension in the novel and how various characters respond to injustice. We took part in a punctuation workshop and practiced ERB test prep skills!

After April Break, 5th graders will finish Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and study a film adaptation of the novel as we decide on the story’s themes. We will continue work on ERB skills and punctuation, with an open-note test planned for April 25th!

Social Studies:

Fifth grade has been working hard on their research papers! I am proud at how well they have picked up the research and outlining it takes to write a paper. We have also begun and will continue our work on humans’ impact on the geography of North America. This will lead us into our final quiz in North America before we finish the year with Africa and Europe.

Science:

Fifth graders explored kinetic energy this week. They experimented with different temperatures of water to see how the energy transfer impacted the temperature of the water when mixed. They considered how warmer particles have more kinetic energy compared to cooler particles, which would have less kinetic energy, relatively. The fifth graders also started researching genetically modified organisms this week, which was inspired by Omnivore’s Dilemma. Next week, they will learn about mixtures, and the various ways they can be separated.
