Learning New Units in Second Grade!

Bird Comics

Second graders have been incorporating birds into all aspects of their classroom lives. This week, students began planning and writing bird comics. They began by writing their stories and including important details about the bird encounter. Next, the comic planning stage. Students sketch their pictures and write a few sentences explaining them. On the final stage, students drew pictures and speech bubbles to explain the bird story they wrote clearly.

Equal Pairs

This week, students have been expanding their knowledge of equal pairs and beginning to discover the world of multiplication. This unit will involve creating pairs and identifying numbers that can create equal groups. During this math study, students will be using a lot of manipulatives (math tools) to create equal groups to help them solve different problems. This unit will help strengthen their math fact skills as well as help them understand equal pairs.

Book Club

Second graders have begun an exciting unit of reading. Students have been given book clubs in which they will be diving deep into series books. Students were so excited to find out their groups and what new books they would be reading. Many students could not stop reading and were so eager to continue reading new books. Each day, students will have an allotted time to read their book as well as an allotted time to talk to their book club mates about what they read!
