Clusters
Kindergarteners were so excited to dive into clusters this week! The Cooper School is divided up into clusters, with students from each grade level. This Wednesday, we were excited for our first chance to meet our friends for Cooper Cluster lunch. Clusters have lunch together once a month to build a sense of community across grade levels. We were so proud to see Kindergarteners bravely introduce themselves and build on relationships with their older peers.
Our Science Walk
We kicked off our new Science unit this week, The Needs of Plant and Animals. To kick off our study, students packed up their Science Tool Kits (their eyes, ears, noses, and hands for observation!) to head outside for a Science Walk. Students looked for and identified living and non-living things, which sparked a discussion of what living things need to survive! We are so proud of our little scientists.
Busy Writers Plan Across Pages
Kindergarten writers are off and running! This week our youngest writers have been busy writing books that teach about the unique topics Kindergarteners know all about! While deep in their work, young writers discovered that sometimes everything they want to say won’t quite fit onto one page. This writing problem brought about the introduction of books with pages stapled together to our writing workshop time! Kindergarten writers learned a strategy to use when writing a teaching book. These writers know that they should touch each page, thinking about what they will write on the page, and leave a small picture clue to remind themselves of their plan. Young writers spent time with a writing partner rehearsing and telling information that they planned to write on each page. This oral language rehearsal with partners not only helps kids clarify and think about what they are going to write but also helps them generate more content. Bravo, young writers. Bravo!
