Lucky Third Graders

Artists….

Thank you to everyone who came to our Art Show this morning! Our third grade artists were beaming with excitement as they shared their current self-portraits and contemporary pieces. They studied Lowcountry marsh scenes by local artist Karin Olah and were inspired by her layered, textured work. Using fabric, oil pastels, and watercolor, students created their own multi-layered paintings in Olah’s unique style.

Scientists….

In Science, we explored how mass affects motion. Students created “twirly birds”—a paper bird secured with a paperclip that twirls through the air when dropped from a height. Third graders then experimented by cutting, bending, or adding paperclips to change their twirly birds. They carefully observed and recorded how their control and variable twirly birds moved. After some testing, students concluded that changing the mass of a material impacts the way it moves through the air!

Poets….

Our young poets are diving deep into their writing and revision process this week. As they write, they are circling words they may want to strengthen and asking themselves, “Are these words creating the image I want?” Students are learning that revision is a powerful tool—not just about fixing mistakes, but about making their poems clearer, more vivid, and more meaningful. They’re also beginning to edit for line breaks, punctuation, and spelling. We continue celebrating poetry each day by reading and discussing new poems, gathering inspiration as we go!
