Tricky Words, No Problem!
Over the past couple weeks second graders have become experts at solving tricky words! We’ve been practicing that when words are tricky we “roll up our sleeves”. Students learned that when they see a tricky word they can check the pictures and think “does that make sense, use the context clues from the story, look at the whole word and break it up part-by-part, look for a word inside a word, reread and ask “does that that sound right?”, use vowel teams and ask “would a different sound help”, and to not just say the word but figure out what the word means to help them solve the problem. We are so proud of students for picking strategies that work best for them when they come across a tricky word. We LOVE seeing our readers’ confidence grow!
Clusters!
Students have been counting down the days to their first cluster lunch as second graders! We were thrilled at the opportunity to get to know new students and teachers! As a community students gathered with their new cluster for a yummy pizza lunch and outside group games. Each cluster designed a poster where they constructed a cluster team name and designed it with fun shaped hand prints. At The Cooper School we value this time of coming together as a community and bonding with students from every grade once a month for cluster!
Welcome to the Marsh Study!
Second graders are so excited to embark on the brand new study, the Marsh Study! Students have begun learning the history about the marsh and how people used to survive off the land using resources. After learning about different aspects of the Kiawah Native Americans, students will observe how we still see these materials in our biome of Charleston. Our goal is for students to connect Charleston history to the environment we use and see everyday.
