Our First Field Trip in Second Grade!

Final Week of Drama

Second grade enjoyed their last week of drama class. Drama teachers read aloud “The Four Money Bears” and asked our second graders to help add sound effects that go along with each page. Students enjoyed playing an act and guess game where half of the class acted out a scene from our book while the other half of the class guessed what scene they thought it was. We have enjoyed watching our actors put all their acting tools together to create scenes and make their characters come to life!

Barrier Island Tour

Thank you, Barrier Island Eco Tours, for an amazing field trip! Second graders spent the day getting their hands dirty and exploring all things marsh! Our field trip began with a boat cruise out to Capers Island Heritage Preserve, a pristine barrier island only reachable by boat. Along the way our naturalist guide explained all about our local ecology and the wildlife we encountered. Second graders helped pull up crab traps, held stone crabs, hermit crabs, and located dolphins, osprey, and other diverse wildlife living in this salt marsh ecosystem. When we got to Capers Island, students explored its amazing “bone yard” and collected their favorite shells to bring home. To end our fun day, we cruised back to the dock and explored skeletons and shells of animals that also live in the marsh, but may not be visible to us. We made tons of memories as a class, and invite you to ask your child one thing they learned while on The Barrier Island Eco Tour.

Sharing with Third Grade

Second graders celebrated the end of their narrative writing unit by sharing their final small moment stories with third graders. Second graders have been working hard to finalize their stories while incorporating a clear start and end at the big moment. They have stretched their stories across multiple pages, writing longer, more complete sentences, and reaching for just-right words. Additionally, they have added character emotions and finally incorporated dialogue. Students learned the importance of focusing on the key aspects of their small moment and why writing it step by step, incorporating thoughts, actions, character emotion, and meaningful details on each page, keeps their readers engaged. Second graders also learned that when they include dialogue in their writing, it makes their small moment story sound more natural and helps bring their story to life.

We’re so proud of the hard work and creativity your children are putting into their writing. You can support them at home by asking about the stories they’re writing and encouraging them to talk about the small moments in their lives that are meaningful to them.
