Our Week in Second Grade!
Permafrost!
This week, Second grade students learned about the soil in the Arctic Circle. There is permafrost in the polar biome, which stands for permanent soil. This occurs because the Arctic Circle does not release enough heat from the sun to thaw the water underground. Students learned all about permafrost and the places that it can be found. As well as the likelihood of flowers and grass growing. At the end, students got the chance to observe and investigate permafrost. Unfortunately, we could not obtain permafrost from the Arctic Circle, however we did have frozen soil to touch!
Solving Story Problems
This week in math we are combining all the skills that we have been learning in this unit. Second graders have been working on their addition and subtraction with two digits numbers, and now we are adding a new element. Students have been reading different story problems and have to decide what diagram or equation matches the story. This skill challenges their reading and math skills at the same time! This skill ensures that students can read a story problem and be able to solve it with equations and diagrams!
Fun in Choir!
This year second graders have been loving choir! Mr. Andy has been teaching the students fun songs to sing together as a class! Students begin each class by warming up their voices in different vocal ranges. They get very excited to jump right into singing! Mr. Andy then introduces a new song that they will sing together as a class. After listening to the song, they then sing together with the guitar! To finish up class, they sing songs that they have worked on in previous classes. They always come out of the choir humming their favorite song.
