Math Review
During the next couple of weeks, students will be reviewing all we have learned throughout the year. One highlight of math this week was reviewing measurement. At the beginning of the year, second graders partnered with each other and measured how tall they were using a string, and then measured that string. This week, we had students measure their height again with partners using a new string and measuring that string. Students then found the difference in height of their two strings to calculate how much they had grown in second grade! Students wowed themselves with how much they have grown in math and in inches!
A Bird’s Home
This week, students are diving even deeper into finding information about their birds. Each day, the excitement grows to show family and friends all of the research they have been doing and all the hard work they have been putting in. Second graders are researching birds that are native to the Charleston area, and they are learning about where to find the nests and locations of these birds. Students are learning about the type of nests their birds make, and even found that some birds take other birds’ nests. This is just another big leap for second graders to learn about the process of research and presentation.
Book Club
Second-grade students look forward to meeting in their book clubs each day. Each book club has been reading its own book series and enjoying every minute together. As a group, students have been identifying main characters, supporting characters, and the setting of their stories. They have also been focusing on the author’s way of showing change in a character, as well as how problems and solutions are created through the plot and dialogue. Students all agree that these elements add excitement and help them relate more closely to the characters in their books. The goal of this unit is for students to continue building their skills in collaboration and group discussion while also making connections between their reading and their writing as they create their own realistic fiction stories.
