Cooper Clusters
Second graders look forward to Cooper Clusters each month. They have built strong relationships with students from other grades and enjoy having conversations with each other and playing games they might not often play. This week, Cooper School students worked together to build leprechaun traps in their cluster! They used a mix of recycled materials and fun, shiny items to help catch the leprecans eye! This idea was developed and presented to us by the middle school spirit club. They did a beautiful job organizing, and we are excited to see what happens next week!
Learning Poetry!
Second graders have been enjoying growing their brains in poetry. Students have been practicing reading and writing poems using line breaks. Line breaks help break up a poem and emphasize what we consider important for the reader to know. Second graders can identify different poetic styles, such as haiku, acrostic, narrative, sonnet, concrete, and lyric. Second graders can also write these styles of poems. Our favorite style of poem to write is an acrostic. Ask your child to share a poem with you!
Place Value Strategy
This weekend, second graders learned that when adding three-digit numbers, sometimes you need to compose (make) a ten, from ten ones, or make a hundred, from ten tens. Students were given a set of equations and worked in pairs to determine which equations to compose and which to omit without solving. As second graders rocked this week, they worked with 3-digit numbers and practiced composing a ten and a hundred in the same equation! Throughout this unit, second graders also use base-ten blocks, base-ten diagrams, expanded form, and other equations to build understanding and demonstrate place-value reasoning.
