See You at The Gala!

All Things in Math!

We had a busy week in math! We finished our unit on time, fractions and money and began a new unit learning how to add and subtract within 1,000! Second graders enjoyed celebrating their new knowledge of telling time and counting money with a fun game of time and money bingo. Later in the week we started our new unit. In this unit we will be focusing on understanding place value, the relationship between addition and subtraction, and how to add and subtract within 1,000.

Learning Poetry!

Second graders have been enjoying growing their brains in poetry. Students have been practicing reading and writing poems using line breaks. Line breaks help us break up a poem and give emphasis to what we feel is important for the reader to know. Second graders can identify different styles of poems such as: haiku, acrostic, narrative, sonnet, concrete, and lyric. Second graders can also write these styles of poems. Our favorite style of poem to write is acrostic. Ask your child to share a poem with you!

We are Engineers!

We were architects for Cooper Village and now we are engineers! This week we began our new science unit, properties of materials. Our goal for this unit is to become engineers and experiment with different materials and mixtures to make glue! This week we learned what an engineer is, what an investigation is, how to make a prediction, and began learning about different types of materials. As a class we discussed why some materials are better than others to create different objects and what would happen if we used the wrong materials. Second graders are excited to learn all about properties of materials and begin their glue making experiments!
