It’s been an awesome week in middle school. Secret Santas, lots of laughter, and excited hallways made it a fun way to wrap up the year. Students have been finishing projects and units, and we can’t wait to see everyone in the new year and hear about their break!

ELA: This week in ELA, 7th grade began a new writing unit. We unpacked the significance of tropes in writing and how tropes make up genres. Our class voted and decided we would focus on the coming of age and horror genres for our stories. We took time to discuss character and setting tropes within these genres, which constitute the building blocks of our first short stories! 7th grade also retook a grammar test after a review, so please take the time to check on those updated grades.
After winter break, 7th grade will finish their horror study and then move on to developing characters, settings, and stories for a coming of age story. Of the two pieces, writers will choose their favorite to rewrite and publish (due January 22).
Science: This week in Science, our 7th graders explored producers and how they use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to create biomass. Students investigated the chemical reaction behind this process and analyzed what happens when plants are missing one or more of the conditions needed to grow. Through thoughtful experimentation and discussion, they strengthened their understanding of how energy flows through ecosystems.
As we head into the break, I hope everyone enjoys time filled with rest, laughter, and curiosity. When we return, students will continue their study of ecosystems and the interconnected systems that support life.
Social Studies: I hope everyone enjoys this holiday season! We will continue our work on the Federal government when we get back to school. Have a great time with friends and family!
Math: This week in math, 7th graders will take their unit 4 assessment over solving multi-step equations, which we will expand on when we return from break as we begin unit 5. In this unit, we’ll explore proportional relationships and use our previously mastered skills of unit rates, ratios, and expressions to help us learn about slope-intercept form and linear graphs.
