Thursday night, we hosted an information session for rising middle schoolers, and I truly wish everyone could have been there. As someone who has experienced this community both as a parent and now from the “inside,” I can honestly say it feels even more magical than I first realized.
The middle school teachers know your children so well. I’ve been in several schools, and I’ve never seen teacher-student relationships as strong and intentional as they are here. Hearing from parents, teachers, and Ms. Riley last night only reaffirmed that my own children are exactly where they’re meant to be. I’m so excited for them to continue experiencing the magic of Cooper Middle — something I know you already appreciate!

ELA: This week in 7th grade, we wrapped up our film study unit! Film enthusiasts got to study the art of adaptation, analyzing the adaptation choices in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. They also worked hard to create pitch decks for a fairy tale to movie adaptation, due this coming Monday.
Next week, 7th grade begins a poetry and identity study! We will test for vocabulary on 2/26, so be sure to encourage your students to study!
Science: This week in Science, our 7th graders investigated how biomass and energy transfer between trophic levels. Through modeling and collaborative discussion, students discovered that only about 10% of energy is transferred from one level of the food chain to the next. This sparked meaningful conversations about ecosystem balance and why lower trophic levels must sustain larger populations to support organisms higher up the food chain. Students are continuing to strengthen their understanding of ecosystems as interconnected systems shaped by energy availability.
Next week, students will shift their focus to Science Fair, selecting topics, conducting background research, and beginning to design their methods, taking the next steps in developing their skills as independent investigators.
Social Studies: Seventh grade is continuing to study Antebellum America and the early years of the 1800’s. They have also begun working on a project for Black History month. Each student chose an individual who contributed to our country and helped make the world a better place! They are creating a poster on them with the information they researched. Next week we will continue with both areas of study and start preparing for our self assessment project.
Math: This week in math, 7th graders wrapped up unit 5 with their end of unit assessment – which challenged them to apply their knowledge of equations and their solutions to more complex problems. Next week, we’ll connect these equations and their situations to functions and how we can see rules in an equation using an input, then receiving an output. We’ll also dive into volume a little bit more deeply, as we view a figure’s volume formula as a function.
