Shining 1st Graders !!!

Biomes

On Tuesday, first-grade scholars explored our Cooper School backyard and looked for different types of biomes. Scholars were ecstatic to do a biome scavenger hunt. First graders looked for flora, fauna, water, soil, energy, and air sources outside. We discovered so many different types of biomes in our school’s backyard. Ask your school about some of the biomes that they found this week!

Math Fun

This week in math scholars have been working on tens and ones. Scholars have been able to count tens and ones and write numbers using pictures and math manipulatives.  First Graders could explain how they know the different representations based on their understanding of tens, the count sequence, and the connections they used to make to the digits.

Reading

In Reading, we are studying the Australian author, Mem Fox!  Mem Fox has written several children’s books.  This week, we read and studied Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild! to learn about the author’s use of dialogue, and we identified Mem Fox stories that do and do not have dialogue in them.  We also read Koala Lou and Possum Magic to highlight features that come from Australia in her books.
