Finalizing Cooper Village
We are almost finished with Cooper Village, and second graders are shaking with excitement to share their hard work with friends and family! This week, students focused on their jobs for the community and chose to create a service to offer or a product to sell. Students who chose to create a service to offer designed a poster to share with the community. They made sure to include the price of the service and a phone number at which to reach them. Students who chose to sell a product designed a sign for the product and created the product from recyclable materials. If you chose to sell a product, you had to make sure you included a clear label of what your product was and the price! Once all services and products were created, students attended Cooper Village Market! Community members sold their products and services while also purchasing other community members’ products and services! We love Cooper Village!
All Things Time and Money
Second graders completed their unit on time and money. This unit concluded with money word problems. During this math unit, students have had an introduction to fractions, shapes, time, and money. Second graders took the time to learn these skills to continue to use them in their lives. Using math manipulatives to work with partners to count money to over a dollar. Using their double-digit addition and subtraction skills, second graders then completed money word problems. Our overall goal for this math unit is for students to be able to tell you the time now and figure out how much change they will get! These skills are also used in the classroom, including telling time to follow our class schedule and using money to buy at our Cooper Village market.
Letters
During our Cooper Village Project, second graders took time to write to a community member who has the same job as they have in Cooper Village. Students used their letter-writing skills to ask questions theyve always wondered about their job: What do you have to do for your job? How did you get your job? What is the best part of your job? What advice would you give our class? How does your job benefit the community? All these questions are just an example of what second graders asked in their letter.
This week, second graders will finally open their letters back from their community member. Students were full of smiles, excitement, and laughter, reading all about their jobs in the real world. Students shared fun facts they learned with each other and shared in the joy of receiving letters! We appreciate all the community members who took the time to write back to our awesome second graders!
