Whenever we have these short weeks, I go into them on Friday looking forward to having some extra time to recharge and enjoy the long weekend. When we come back to school, I also find myself enjoying the time at school. Time away can be beneficial since we then return and have a deeper appreciation for everything. When I come back I realize how special this place is and feel fortunate to be a part of it. Sometimes taking a break from something will allow you to grow your love for it in the long run. As we get ready for the holiday season, this is an opportunity for everyone to start to think about their own life and what they have gotten away from and maybe start it up again!

ELA- 6th grade transitioned to a novel study this week, beginning Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me, paying close attention to how the novel tackles the idea of perception in relationships and social interactions. We also started vocabulary with a unit 3 test scheduled for 10/24.
Next week, 6th grade will begin filling out essay-planner charts, which will contain text evidence connected to perception for a future essay in the following unit. They should begin studying now for next Friday’s vocab test!
Science- This week in science, 6th graders put together everything they have been learning about energy transfer and air pressure to model how wind is formed. Students created diagrams to differentiate between a land breeze and a sea breeze. Next week students will expand their knowledge of wind to see how global winds affect climates around the world. Students will then explore the meteorological effects of having water in our atmosphere.
Social Studies- Sixth grade during this short week continued the beginning of the Egypt unit. We introduced the gods of the time as well as the foundations of their civilization. The students began working on their group project on the Egyptian gods! They are making life sized gods with details on the time, religion and facts of ancient Egypt!
Math- This week in math, sixth graders spent a bit of time refamiliarizing ourselves with fractions and how they work and what they mean before we dive deeper into unit 3 – which expands on our knowledge of fractions and decimals and solidifies their mastery. Unit 4 introduces equations and expressions, where they’ll need to apply fraction and decimal operations – so it’s important that we work to master that now!
Next week, 6th graders will practice fraction operations and apply them to our previous unit – which involved rates, ratios, and percentages. We’ll also work on understanding the big relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages!
