Whenever we have these short weeks, I go into them on Friday looking forward to having some extra time to recharge and enjoy the long weekend. When we come back to school, I also find myself enjoying the time at school. Time away can be beneficial since we then return and have a deeper appreciation for everything. When I come back I realize how special this place is and feel fortunate to be a part of it. Sometimes taking a break from something will allow you to grow your love for it in the long run. As we get ready for the holiday season, this is an opportunity for everyone to start to think about their own life and what they have gotten away from and maybe start it up again!

ELA- 5th grade readers returned from break to begin a new novel study in The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. We began our study looking for elements of figurative language like allusion and idiom! Readers also began unit 3 in vocabulary, with a test planned for 10/24.
Next week, students will continue their reading of The Tale of Despereaux looking for further examples of figurative language and unpacking the meaning behind them. They can begin studying for their test next Friday!
Science- This week 5th grade started exploring natural resources. Students sorted items into renewable and non-renewable resources. We looked at how earth materials are used to make concrete by making a class stepping stone. Next week we will start a mini project exploring natural resources and how we can use them sustainably.
Social Studies- Though it was a short week the students worked hard on finishing their state projects and their work on the geographical features of the United States. Next week we will finish the US with our state capitals quiz as well as humans impact in the country on our natural resources. This is an important part of the unit as they learn their role in society and the contributions they can make to a bright future!
Math- This week, 5th grade mathematicians spent our short week working towards mastery of fractional multiplication and division before we wrap up this unit next week. They also crushed their ERB milestone on Wednesday!
Next week, we’ll wrap up unit 3 with taking our unit test on Friday. We’ll spend the first part of the week reviewing fraction multiplication and division. Their test will assess them on their ability to identify equivalent fractions, multiply and divide fractions, and apply those skills to real-life scenarios involving area models, recipes, fractional weights, etc.
