With the weather getting colder and the prospect of snow this weekend, it reminds me of being in middle school. Growing up in New England, whenever the weather was looking like snow we would all think the same thing… SNOW DAY! Being able to play outside, building forts or sledding, the snow was an excuse to play outside with friends. These days, I’ll admit I look forward to staying inside during the cold! Still, as I look back on my time playing in the snow, I hope that this will be a good time for families and friends to possibly enjoy feeling young out in the snow and enjoy time together after, warming up with hot chocolate!

ELA: 6th grade started a new information writing unit, brainstorming through broad research about topics that interested ourselves and other tweens in our community. We discussed how bloggers and journalists structure their articles to engage and inform readers effectively. 6th grade tested their grammar skills on Thursday, and should have graded assessments in their folders this weekend!
Next week, 6th grade will stay in grammar study rather than the usual vocab switch to account for a larger unit. Writers will begin to outline articles they would like to contribute to a class blog.
Science: This week in Science, our 6th graders completed their comparison study of different types of cells and discovered that humans share the most similarities with bread mold. Students researched examples from each of the three domains and shared their findings with classmates, strengthening their understanding through collaboration and discussion.
Students also explored the history of scientific classification, gaining insight into how scientists have organized and redefined living things over time.
Next week, students will take a quiz on the three domains on Thursday, February 5th, and begin their investigation into plant cells, continuing to build on the questions and discoveries from this unit.
Social Studies: Sixth has finished India and China. They did a fantastic job on such a large unit of study and I am glad to see how much they have enjoyed the material. Their test is on Tuesday and they have all the materials needed. We are then moving into ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Look for information in the future about a new project that the sixth graders will be doing on Rome!
Math: This week in math, the 6th graders reviewed for and took their unit 5 assessment – which assessed their mastery of constants of proportionality, proportional relationships, and the relationships between two quantities. Next week, we’ll dive into unit 6 – which continues our exploration of proportionality within percent increases and decreases. We’ll revisit percentages and how to view them as proportional relationships in an equation.
