Thursday night, we hosted an information session for rising middle schoolers, and I truly wish everyone could have been there. As someone who has experienced this community both as a parent and now from the “inside,” I can honestly say it feels even more magical than I first realized.
The middle school teachers know your children so well. I’ve been in several schools, and I’ve never seen teacher-student relationships as strong and intentional as they are here. Hearing from parents, teachers, and Ms. Riley last night only reaffirmed that my own children are exactly where they’re meant to be. I’m so excited for them to continue experiencing the magic of Cooper Middle — something I know you already appreciate!

ELA: This week in 6th grade, writers wrapped up their blog post writings and practiced summarizing real world articles. They pinpointed the main idea and supporting details in their summaries. We can’t wait to share our writing on our own class website, which will be coming to your emails next week!
Next week, 6th grade will begin their poetry unit! Their unit will be focusing on poetry and fine art. 6th grade also has a vocabulary test on Wednesday 2.26, so be sure to study in preparation.
Science: This week in Science, 6th graders were introduced to biomimicry and explored how nature and humans approach problem-solving in different ways. This sparked rich discussions about how we can study organism adaptations to help address challenges facing our world and local communities.
Students engaged in case studies of the blue whale and the jackrabbit, examining how adaptations in these organisms have inspired scientists and engineers in biomimicry design. Through this work, students began to see nature as both teacher and innovator.
Next week, students will continue developing their biomimicry projects by identifying a problem they want to address and seeking inspiration from the natural world, applying creativity and systems thinking to real-world challenges.
Social Studies: Sixth grade has continued working on our unit of the Greeks and Romans. They have also begun working on a project for Black History month. Each student chose an individual who contributed to our country and helped make the world a better place! They are creating a poster on them with the information they researched. Next week we will continue with both areas of study and start preparing for our self assessment project.
Math: This week in math, 6th graders used their short week to wrap up unit 6 – which challenged them to apply their mastery of rates, ratios, and decimals to percentage increases and decreases. Next week, we’ll dive into unit 7, which begins with introducing both positive and negative numbers as rational numbers, and provides strategies for operations with negative numbers.
