As we count down the days to spring break, our middle school classrooms are buzzing with energy and creativity. Students are in the full swing of projects from bacteria and science fair to poems and roman history, and it has been such a joy to watch their ideas take shape from initial plans to final products. Even more meaningful has been seeing students take ownership of their learning—making decisions, problem-solving, and truly investing in the process.
Alongside this work, we’ve been having important conversations about creativity—not just as something we use in our projects and hobbies, but as something that shapes how we interact with one another. Competition, both on the playground and in the classroom, can sometimes bring out strong emotions, and we’ve taken time to reflect, repair, and rebuild when words have not reflected our best selves. Through these moments, students are learning that creativity also means finding new ways to communicate, to show empathy, and to strengthen genuine relationships.
Middle school is a time of growth in so many ways, and it has been incredibly meaningful to support students not only as learners, but as thoughtful, caring members of a community.

ELA: This week in ELA, 6th grade poet-artists worked to polish up final pieces for Spread the Word. Masterwork paintings were interpreted through the lens of poetry and brought to Art with Ms. Henslee to begin “translating” into a new medium!
Next week, students will polish and neatly write poems for display before moving into their last novel study of the year in Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman. We will also begin an editing and dictation unit in grammar!
Science: This week in science, 6th graders analyzed some other biomimicry inventions in order to observe strengths and weaknesses in each other’s proposals. Students then refined their own biomimicry portfolios drawing stronger connections between the organisms that inspired them and their invention. Next week students will film a short video promoting their biomimicry project.
Math: This week in math, 6th graders wrapped up their rational numbers unit with their end of unit assessment. They’ve mastered operations involving negative numbers – and will use this knowledge to carry into their next unit on Statistics and Variability. We’ll start with learning how to calculate different measures of center and variability, and exploring different ways to represent data.
Social Studies: Sixth grade has done such a fantastic job on their Roman Empire project. For being the first class ever to try this, they put in great effort and really took to the idea of the ghost tour! Next week we will be going back to the Greeks to see the connection between the two peoples, including their Gods, cultures and lifestyles.
