These few weeks between our two major holiday breaks have always been, for me at least, a time to look back at just how fast the beginning of the school year goes! It really is interesting in the fact of just how much we all go through in just a few months. I also reflect on just how grateful I am for this community and everyone involved. In this season of thanks, I truly am appreciative of my colleagues and everyone else who puts forth so much effort every day to make this truly the great place it is. I hope for everyone they can find time to reflect on what a great start to the school year we have had and can also get excited for what is to come!

ELA: 6th grade returned from Thanksgiving ready to write! Writers examined ways to “elevate” our conclusions in our literary essays and self-edit with care. Final drafts will be due on 12/11 next week! Students started a new grammar unit on nouns and pronouns, picking apart their many categories and iterations in sentences.
Next week, 6th graders will publish and share their essays, test for grammar, and turn in their reading journals on 12/12.
Science: This week in science 6th graders started exploring microscopes. Students learned how to properly hold and use microscopes, how to prepare a wet mount slide, and how to measure microscopic organisms Next week students will start observing and measuring living organisms through a microscope.
Social Studies: Sixth grade students began this week with our new unit, studying ancient China and India. Our first area this week was China, looking at their achievements, geography and empires through the ages. We also discussed the great wall, their writings and inventions! Next week we will be finishing China and going to ancient India, and tying the two together with the most famous trade route, the Silk road. We will also be introducing ourselves to Indian culture by experiencing Indian food!
Math: This week in math, 6th graders learned about the distributive property, what it means, and how to represent it with diagrams. We also analyzed expression equivalency before taking our quiz on Wednesday. Next week, we’ll start the second half of unit 4, in which we’ll explore expressions and equations that include exponents.
