This past week, the TCS Middle Schoolers began planning for our beloved Halloween Carnival! 5th graders started arranging and delegating decoration plans, 6th and 7th graders chose and started designing their booths, and 8th grade set out to draft plans for their signature haunted maze. Growing up in the midwest, Halloween wasn’t as widely appreciated as it is here in Charleston – and so it’s fascinating to me to see how much this community appreciates and celebrates this eerie holiday.
I want to encourage our students to approach their lives in the same way they have approached this spooky season – tackling the scary things. Whether it’s a test, an application for high school, a big game, or even a chore they don’t love, my wish is that they’ll take ownership of, plan for, and execute these tasks in the same way they’ve dived into their tasks for this Halloween Carnival. Spooky season is a time to honor our bravery, fearlessness, and determination!

This week in ELA, 5th grade essayists concluded their literary essays, working hard to revise and edit their pieces for clarity and impact. They studied hard for their first vocabulary test of the year
Next week, after fall break, 5th grade starts a novel study of Where the Red Fern Grows. This unit will focus on figurative language and its impact on story! Be sure to bring their novels to school if you have not already. We will also get back to grammar for two weeks with a grammar test on 10/23.
Social Studies:
The fifth grade class has had fun starting our learning on the fifty states. They have enjoyed the fifty nifty United States song, as well as the US map game. We will finish the western half of the country next week and will begin working on our next project in which students will research an individual state. This will be a poster project.
Science:
Fifth graders explored erosion and deposition this week. They used sand tables to see how water erodes and deposits the land to make various landforms. The fifth graders had a great time at Charlestowne Landing and were able to use this experience to help them brainstorm ideas for their National Parks. They came back from the trip full of ideas. Next week, they will begin to work on their National Parks projects.
