Growing up in the FRIGID midwest, Spring Break was always the most anticipated time of year. The end of winter was near, trees were maybe starting to blossom, and of course, everyone would head south for a week to jump-start their thawing. I always thought to myself, when we visited places like South Carolina and Florida for break, “Do people down here look forward to Spring Break as much as us midwesterners and northerners do?” After living here for 2 years now, I can answer my younger self with a resounding “YES!!!!!”
Spring Break, no matter where in the country you are, is a refreshing reset button. It’s a time for students to recharge, step away from the pressures of school, and enjoy a well-deserved break. Whether it’s spent traveling, hanging out with friends, or simply enjoying time at home, Spring Break offers a chance to unwind, explore new activities, and return to school feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rest of the year. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of balance between work and relaxation in a young person’s life.
We wish you a safe and refreshing Spring Break!

Math:
This week, 5th graders wrapped up this SHORT unit and took a test on Thursday, March 27th. When we return from spring break, we’ll begin our final unit of study for 5th grade math which entails taking all of the skills we’ve learned so far this year, reviewing them, and solving more multi-step complex problems that integrate all of the skills. We’ll start off with review of multiplication and division first!
ELA:
5th grade readers began their reading of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry this week. They are filling out daily prompts and comprehension questions in a printed student packet that go with the novel – make sure your student continues to keep this packet safely in their take home folder because it will be used as the final grade of their unit! We also began a grammar study, with a test planned for April 11th.
After Spring Break, 5th grade will continue reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, working hard to compare characters and how they each deal with historical situations. Be sure to push your student to start studying for that week’s grammar test now.
Social Studies:
Fifth grade has begun work on North American geography and its role in our daily lives. This will be a short unit focusing on human impacts and how we play a role on the land itself. We have also done work on Women’s History month and will finish the week with important women in today’s world.
Science:
Fifth graders explored mystery mixtures this week! They learned about the importance of using the chemical formula name, the common name, and the chemical composition when describing a mixture. The fifth graders learned about solutions by making one with Tang and water. They taste-tested different concentrations to see which one they like the best. They also started to read Omnivore’s Dilemma, contemplating the farm system here in America.
