Spring Break!

Growing up in the FRIGID midwest, Spring Break was always the most anticipated time of year. The end of winter was near, trees were maybe starting to blossom, and of course, everyone would head south for a week to jump-start their thawing. I always thought to myself, when we visited places like South Carolina and Florida for break, “Do people down here look forward to Spring Break as much as us midwesterners and northerners do?” After living here for 2 years now, I can answer my younger self with a resounding “YES!!!!!”

Spring Break, no matter where in the country you are, is a refreshing reset button. It’s a time for students to recharge, step away from the pressures of school, and enjoy a well-deserved break. Whether it’s spent traveling, hanging out with friends, or simply enjoying time at home, Spring Break offers a chance to unwind, explore new activities, and return to school feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rest of the year. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of balance between work and relaxation in a young person’s life.

Math:

This week in Algebra 1, we worked towards mastering the use of the quadratic formula, as well as exploring what happens when we get irrational solutions to quadratic equations. When we return from break, we’ll continue manipulating quadratic functions to get certain pieces we need, as well as using them to model and solve specific problems.

 

ELA:

8th grade journalists studied the art of investigative journalism this week – studying various examples of extraordinary journalism and practicing the use of observation to report on raw footage of the first moon landing! They brainstormed and sought out topics that they felt needed investigating for upcoming articles in our class newspaper. 

 

After Spring Break, journalists will dive heavily into research, interviewing, and data gathering to begin their investigative reports, which are due April 23rd. They will also test on grammar concepts started before break, on April 11th.

 

Social Studies:

The eighth graders are finishing imperialism and its role in WW1 and the formation of the known world. They have also been working hard on their research papers and the rough draft of their paper is due the first week of May. We have also done work on Women’s History month and will finish the week with important women in today’s world.

 

Science:

Eighth graders learned more about recessive and dominant genes this week. They considered how phenotypes and genotypes are passed down to offspring. They also learned how advantageous genes are the ones that are more likely to be passed onto offspring. The field trip to the Natural History Museum has also been changed. We will be going on Tuesday, April 8th due to scheduling challenges.
