Spring has Sprung

Social Studies

Our journey into South Carolina history has officially begun! This week, we focused on the state’s physical features. Scholars explored the six landform regions of South Carolina, the four major regions used to group counties, and the major rivers and canals that shape our state. A highlight for many was realizing during our recent trip to EdVenture that we traveled through three landform regions.

A Visit from Marcus Amaker

We had the incredible honor of welcoming Charleston’s own poet laureate, Marcus Amaker, to speak with the third and fourth graders. He shared his passion for poetry, music, and art, captivating our students with his spoken word performance. Mr. Amaker read from his children’s book, Black Music Is, and gave us a glimpse into his creative process. We are thrilled that he will be joining us again in May for our Pass It On poetry celebration!

Read Aloud

This week we turned the final page of When the Sea Turned to Silver, and what a journey it’s been! This story has completely held our class’s attention for months. We’ve had such thoughtful, deep discussions about the characters, the choices they made, and the stories within the story. It follows a brave girl named Pinmei, who sets off on a quest to rescue her grandmother and ends up discovering her own strength along the way. It’s filled with adventure, heart, and beautiful messages about storytelling, sacrifice, and love. We were all a little sad to say goodbye to it—but what a special experience it was to share together!
