Spring Into Third Grade With Us

Looking On the Bright Side

Third graders dove into optimism this week, exploring what it truly means to be optimistic throughout their lives. Together, we talked about looking at the world through “rose-colored glasses,” finding the brighter side of any situation, and staying positive even when situations are normally seen as challenging. Students know that a positive mindset can shape their experiences and interactions with others. It has been wonderful to watch third graders put their optimistic skills to work each day!

Crazy Carts

Students are becoming expert engineers as they design and build their very own carts! Students learned about the importance of bearings when constructing carts and how they help wheels roll smoothly instead of slide. These young scientists discovered that for a cart to successfully travel from one place to another, it must include key components such as bearings, wheels, and an axle system. They then took on an exciting challenge to see whose cart could travel the furthest within certain constraints. Along the way, students worked through the scientific process, testing, observing, and revising their designs, to improve their carts and deepen their understanding of how things move.

Clock Wise

Third graders have been working with measuring length, weight, volume and now the have moved into calculating elapsed time. We worked through problems to understand how long an activity might take, how much time is needed to travel, or what time you would need to leave to get to tennis on time. These skills are important for growing minds and are directly connected to real-life situations. Mathematicians made connections between understanding elapsed time and planning vacations, organizing their daily schedules, and deciding how much time they should set aside to complete activities. We are excited to watch their math skills grow!
