Happy February Folks!

Math:
This week, 6th graders connected rate of change, ratios, variables, equations, graphs, and tables together to help relate everything we’ve done in math so far this year! Next week, we’ll apply this knowledge to other proportional relationships like the area and circumference of circles. We’ll also take our test over this short unit next Thursday, February 13!
ELA:
6th grade continued researching youth and teen topics of interest this week. Writers began organizing their notes into the inverted pyramid structure from ‘need to know’ information down to ‘nice to know’ for their future articles. We also took a grammar test on Friday – so be sure to look out for those grades soon.
Next week, 6th grade writers will draft and revise their informative pieces. These writings are due for publishing by February 19th. They will also begin a vocabulary study next week, with a test planned for 2/20.
Social Studies:
Sixth grade did wonderful with their work on Hinduism and India. Their projects came out great and they asked many questions about their culture that lead to excellent discussions in class. Starting next week we will learn about Buddhism and present day India. This will also include a unit in which we will have a little party in class and try traditional Indian cuisine as well as Buddhist meditation.
Science:
The sixth graders had a guest speaker this week…Joshua Robinson! He came to talk about environmental engineering to help guide our biomimicry-inspired homes. The sixth graders learned more about flooding in Charleston, to consider the importance of building homes that can withstand flooding. The sixth graders developed their materials list as well, so we can start building next week! Yay!
