Math:
This week, 5th graders reviewed for and took our unit 5 test on Wednesday. Next, we’re going to kick off unit 6 by applying our decimal and fraction mastery to things like metric and customary conversions for measurement!
ELA:
5th grade writers began researching their GOATs this week for argumentative writing. Writers worked on researching like a reporter, asking who-what-when-where-why questions as we read. They also read and took notes on the ‘other side’ by digging into possible arguments for other GOATs who could challenge our greats. We developed strong intros and rock solid theses to kick start our rough drafts. 5th graders also completed a grammar test on Wednesday, so be sure to ask about their final grade!
Next week, 5th graders will continue first drafts and revisions of their argumentative essays, which are due February 20th. They will switch to two weeks of vocabulary study, with a test planned for 2/19.
Social Studies:
Fifth graders did a fantastic job with their work on South America. They finished their first unit on the continent and we will finish next week learning about the different peoples, human impacts, and cultures of the continent. This will lead them into their next project where they will research an issue facing a country in South America.
Science:
Fifth graders learned about “germs” and how they spread this week! We did the “covid lab,” a yearly hit! We simulate the spread of covid using vials and pipettes to exchange “germs.” One person starts the lab with “covid” and after three rounds of exchanges, half the class was infected. They will use this experience to consider how bacteria and fungus spread not just through people, but also surfaces in the school. They will form their groups and hypotheses next week. The petri dishes will have time to incubate over the February break.
