What…a…drag!

What…a…drag!

Y’all! January! Cold, dark, with high expectations. Gotta love it, right?

Well, for us at school, we are digging deep. You walk into middle school, and there is laughter, hard work, deep questioning, studying, project making, “mathing”…all the things that could be a drag, aren’t. What is the “magic sauce?” COFFEE!

J/K…but not really :) It’s that we are trudging together. We are all working hard, having fun, and hoping for spring!

Bundle up!

Math:

This week, 5th graders learned new decimal operations like adding and subtracting, strategies to solve them, and applied them to real-life scenarios. Next week, we’ll continue building our decimal mastery to include multiplication and division.

ELA:

5th grade nonfiction readers honed in on the art of determining the ‘main idea’ in more complex nonfiction texts as they took notes this week. We also started filling in information for our ‘pocket guides’ which is their unit project due on 1/24. 5th grade tested their grammar skills on 1/15 and transitioned to vocabulary study right away.

Next week, readers will complete their pocket guides, demonstrating their understanding of nonfiction structures, main ideas, and supporting details to finish the unit. They will also test their vocabulary on Friday, 1/24 – so be sure to encourage good study habits in preparation!

Social Studies:

Fifth grade did a wonderful job this week with their research into South American geography as well as the introduction into the countries on the continent. Going into next week we will continue with the geographical features, focusing on the Amazon River and the Andes Mountains.

Science:

Fifth graders learned about yeast this week! They tried to bring yeast out of dormancy using sugar and cookies. They learned how yeast is a fungus that needs a certain temperature, food, and water to “wake up.” They also learned about fungus characteristics and their importance in our ecosystems. The fifth graders also learned about different types of leaves and their importance to the photosynthesis process. Next week, they will work on their projects about plants that changed history, as well as learn more about photosynthesis.

Important Dates:

January 20- MLK Day, no school

January 29- 100th day of school
