Celebrating Growth!!

Student-Led Conferences

This week, Kindergarteners invited parents into the classroom to guide them through IMG_1056
discussion and activities about their growth and goals. At the portfolio center, students shared their Self-Assessment Folder, a folder full of student reflection on everything from math to handwriting. At the math center, kindergarteners taught their parents how to play a dice game where they had to add and subtract. At the reading and writing center, students showed parents a “just right” book from the beginning of the year, and a book that is just right now… and what a difference! At the science center, students showed parents what they know about animals and their habitats. It was a such a great afternoon!

Trees, Trees, Trees!IMG_1066

The kindergarten scientists have been busy observing our school’s backyard trees! Students collaborated to measure and find the circumference of two different trees. They have noticed that there are a wide variety of trees. Students also observed that trees have different types of bark leaves, and branches. We examined nuts, seeds, cones, flowers, and twigs! Young scientists compared deciduous trees to evergreen trees, noting that deciduous trees’ leaves turn vibrant colors in the fall while evergreen trees’ leaves stay green all year. Kindergarteners have been observing trees and illustrating their observations in our Tree Observation Journal. Ask your young scientist what they learned about trees this week!

Marvelous Math

Kindergarten mathematicians have been expanding their math skills to double-digit numbers this week. Mathematicians have placed numbers in the tens and ones place, created double-digit numbers with bundles of ten and have used dice to create and compare double-digit numbers. This week coming up they will use this prior knowledge to add and subtract double-digit numbers. They are so excited!
