Fourth Graders have just completed their first math unit of the year. This unit focused on learning geometry concepts such as lines, angles, and polygons. Students learned about lines, line segments, rays, the different kinds of polygons, and the difference between parallel and perpendicular lines. Through this geometry study, students were able to classify shapes based on their angles (right, obtuse, acute), number of sides, and if they were convex or concave. Ask your child all about the properties of polygons.
Each week students have jobs to help keep the classroom neat, organized, and our plants and pets happy. Veterinarians are the coveted job, in which 2 students are in charge of taking care of the gerbils. This includes feeding, watering, and loving them, as well as cleaning out their cage on Fridays. Our class Gardeners keep our plants happy. Organizers, Tech Helpers, and Teacher Helpers keep everything else organized. Each week one student is a Backyard Helper, along with one child from each grade, with Mr. Atam. These helpers keep our backyard in pristine condition. Having a job in the classroom helps students to feel a sense of ownership and responsibility over their workspace. Students maintain an awareness of their surroundings if they are the ones cleanings and caring for it. Ask your student what their job was this week!
Next week the Fourth Graders are excited to begin a new music program where they will learn to play string instruments! We have some musically talented students in this class who have been practicing a variety of instruments for years. Hazel, our Music Director, has designed a program that will allow each student to explore his or her musical interests. Don’t forget your string instrument on Monday!
