Climbing, Writing, and More!

Author Expert

Our Writers are hard at work on their Author Expert projects! Students read several books by their author and chose one as their Mentor Text.  They studied their Mentor Text and used it to create an author inspired story.  In Reading, they identified the characters, setting, problem, and solution in their Mentor Text and are using it to create a book report.  They are also learning to use their iPad to find information about their author and the books that he or she wrote.  We can’t wait to create our Author Posters next!

James Island County Park

This week our adventurous First Graders took their first ever Movement field trip. We spent the morning at the James Island County Park climbing wall. As always, the students were ecstatic to ride the bus and sing some bus songs together. Once we arrived, the First Graders went straight to the top! We were blown away by how brave and persistent our First Grade friends were when faced with more challenging climbing courses. We are so excited to return! Ask your First Grader their climbing goal for next week!

Fraction Fun!

This week in Math, we introduced fractions! First Grade mathematicians enjoyed diving into the world of fractions. Students learned that when decomposing a shape into two equal pieces, each piece is “a half of” the shape, and the pieces are called halves. When a shape is decomposed into four equal pieces, each piece is “a fourth of” the shape, and the pieces are called fourths or quarters.
