Middle School students are settling into their routines. They are able to transition into their classes around campus, gather their necessary materials, take locker breaks on their own, and experience the independence that comes with middle school.
As teachers, we are working on building relationships with each student, but also creating a classroom culture of respect. However, to be respected by our students, we know we must respect them. We give the middle schoolers control over their learning, follow through with our messages consistently, and strive to model a good example. It feels like we are setting up for a great year ahead!
Here’s a look at what is happening in each of the classes:
What’s happening in Science:
Cartographers created maps this week! By modeling their own mountains out of clay, 6th graders drew 2D topography maps to model their 3D landforms. They thematically included symbols on their maps for readers to navigate through the landscape. Cartographers also investigated the importance of using maps to solve contemporary problems.
What’s up in Math?
The 6th graders are wrapping up Unit 1. They will have an assessment next week that will measure their understanding and mastery of the objectives of volume of prisms. We are working to solidify definitions of geometric vocabulary and use them in our classroom language. I am excited for the students to show what they know on our first formal assessment of the year. We will quickly jump into Unit 2 and begin thinking about ratios, rates, and percentages!
What’s happening in ELA?
In 6th Grade ELA this week, the students had one-on-one conferences with Dr. Ev. The conferences revolved around talking about individual strengths and weaknesses. Students shared about the books they have been reading. They also set goals for their own growth in ELA. Sixth graders did an excellent job on using their vocabulary words in context. Students also learned more about Kek’s transition from Africa to the USA in our anchor book entitled Home of the Brave.
