Week of December 2-6

TCS Holiday Tree at Marion Square

In the days leading up to the holidays, our students used center time to do finger-knitting to make woodland decorations for our tree at Marion Square.  This year our theme is “Sounds of the Season” and the students all used small sticks, silvery-white yarn, and small bells to construct lovely natural ornaments.  This theme will dovetail nicely with our upcoming study of winter festivals and the music associated with each! If you have a chance during this holiday season, please stop by Marion Square to view our tree and all of its beautiful creations.

Opinion Writing and Collection Museum

First Graders excitedly jumped into their new Writing Workshop unit, Opinion Writing! Our young authors brought in their collections of items that included Matchbox Cars, stuffed animals (especially kitties!), bottle caps, sea shells, rocks, etc. They used the following steps to help them judge their items fairly and to award one with a “Best In Show” designation: 

Putting them in a ranked line, comparing things that are the same, deciding which is best, and then giving reasons why they reached their decision by using the word “because”.

SEL and Social Studies

Our amazing learners are beginning to delve into the many aspects of citizenship. They began with a look at our world and its continents. The students began their study with a writing project titled “Our World.” They have read about the continents, practiced writing the names, sang a song about the continents, and identified North America on a map. From there they moved on to our country and read about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Next they read about our state, our city, and our neighborhoods!  Lovely drawings were produced for their writing folders that showcased their neighborhood!
