The Cooper School Daily

Enthusiastic and Engaged Middle Schoolers

We have reached our full fifth week of teaching and learning here at The Cooper School and your middle schoolers never fail to amaze us. Students are fully engaged in their learning and it shows through their enthusiasm and inquiries. There is never a dull moment in the middle school building. Students can be heard working on their Math problems, excitedly sharing their science experiments, discussing characters in books they are reading, engaging in discussions about health, and vociferously trying out new Spanish and French words.

Here’s a look at what is happening in each of the classes:

What’s happening in Science:

Astronomers began sharing their presentations this week! We learned about constellations and made constellations out of marshmallows and toothpicks. We also learned about the reasons for seasons and drew beautiful depictions of seasonal changes of oak trees. Lastly, we learned about the death of stars, experimenting with exploding balloons! We will finish up our Astronomy unit next week and move into American history.

What’s up in Math?

We are busy reviewing for our test next week! Yesterday, we enjoyed the beautiful weather and created tessellations using transformations in the sunshine! The students are amazing advocates for themselves and always ask lots of questions in order to understand the concepts! I am so impressed with their grit and perseverance. They are truly super students!

What’s happening in ELA:

Seventh graders are finishing up their various books by famous authors of various ethnicities. The stories are realistic and often stir up intense discussions on difficult situations! They’re going to be comparing the main character of their story to the main character in our class story by Matt de la Pena. Seventh graders are also working on a summary for their individual books in preparation for completing a videotaped interview. Their summaries include illustrations of scenes they found memorable from the story. They will need their computers for each ELA class starting on Monday. We are also finishing up grammar this week and will start our two weeks of vocabulary on September 27th.
