The Cooper School Daily

Fall is coming…

October 1st. The day most of us start thinking about Halloween and autumnal coffee flavors. Well, the day has arrived! The days are getting shorter, the morning temperatures are a bit more mild, and school routines are in full swing!

We are wrapping up units in some classes, as we reach the end of the first six weeks of school. In other classes, we are delving into projects to apply our new knowledge. Across the board, routines are established, expectations are in stone, and new friendships are being formed.

Here’s a look at what is happening in each of the classes:

What’s happening in Science:
The National Parks are looking awesome! Developers spent time scaling and modeling this week. They are creating their maps and models with gusto! The creativity and enthusiasm are contagious. Groups are collaborating and problem solving, while independent workers are making decisions by reflecting and following through. Each project looks so unique and reflective of the creator.

What’s up in Math?
Mathematicians are using what they know about equivalent ratios in order to find unit rates. We have been talking about mixing paint, making hot chocolate, and even peeling potatoes in order to develop a real-life understanding of ratios. The students are understanding how to create equivalent ratios in order to double or even half a recipe. Next week, we move into using different representations for ratios and when to use a unit rate in order to solve. There will be a Mid-Unit Assessment next Friday, we will complete a study guide together in class on Thursday!

What’s happening in ELA?
This week in sixth grade, the students have been working on their book summary of Hatchet. While working on their book summary, they’ve been reviewing their grammar skills at every given opportunity. We’ve been reviewing the following grammar skills: articles, nouns, and homophones. Next week, students will begin working on their narrative writing units.
