First Grade First Full Week!

Healthy Bodies Study in Science

We continued our Healthy Bodies study in Science. Our focus this week was on food groups. As an interactive activity before lunch, the children sorted small amounts of their lunches onto paper plates that had been labeled with colorful representations of the recommended percentage of each group in a healthy diet. In this way they learned about nutrition and how each food group contributes to a balanced life.

Budding Writers

This week we took our writing into further adventures. Each child was encouraged to think of a small moment in their lives on which they could build a story. Using mentor texts, such as George McClement’s Night of the Veggie Monster, the classmates drew inspiration about what good writers do. Our writers know how to think of an idea about their actions or experiences and plan a story across pages! Ask your First Grader what they wrote about in Writing Workshop this week!

Specials

We had a full week of Specials, including Music, Art, Purposeful Movement, Choir, and Yoga! Check out the pictures of the Movement activities on Instagram!

We lifted weights to build our biceps.

We love the climbing wall!

Centers

First Grade Friends enjoyed exploring Learning Centers this week. Our scholars loved working with partners as they rotated through a variety of math centers. Math concepts were reviewed and practiced as were routines and procedures of working in a hands-on way. Centers were dedicated to math skills this week but we will utilize centers in many academic ways this year.
