First Grade Fun !!!

Science

Our exciting bug and insect unit was launched this week. Students shared what they “wondered” about bugs and/or insects. Students identified the three parts of an insect’s body- “head, thorax, and abdomen”. Scholars were ecstatic to draw pictures of their favorite insects and learn what makes an insect an insect. We can’t wait to continue this study and learn more about insects.

Math

In Math this week we strengthened our counting-on skills and addition fluency by playing “Partners to 10.”  Students each got a set of cards.  One partner had cards with numerals and the other partner had cards with dots on them.  Eureka Math refers to these as 5 group cards.  Students set up their cards face down and each partner turned over one of their cards, like in the game Memory. If the pair of cards equaled 10, they got a point. Students kept track of their points using a dry erase marker on their window.   Students were extremely engaged in this game and worked cooperatively to count on to make 10!

Curiosity Project

The First Grade class and the Fifth and Sixth Grade classes are working together to develop our sense of wonder!  First Grade Scholars brainstormed topics they wonder about and created questions related to those topics. The Middle School students will research the answers to these questions and create a podcast for the First Grade class to watch and learn from! Please visit Padlet via this link to view our Curious Learners’ questions!
