Getting Festive!

Week of December 16-20

Ravenous Readers!

Reading Workshop is one of our favorite times of the day. There is always something special about the reading of books, and we rejoice in the tremendous reading growth of our young scholars! We delight in celebrating their triumphs as they devour books!

Each Guided Reading group focuses on different skills each week, according to their reading level. This week, some of the skills reviewed and practiced were reading with fluency and expression as well as phonetic decoding skills such as vowel-consonant-vowel patterns and using blends and digraphs, especially th, sh, and ch.  They become more proficient each week in their comfort with these skills.

Getting Festive

In the spirit of the winter holidays, on the last day of school before the break, students and teachers came together for an all-school read aloud and candy cane hunt.  Students have enjoyed creating festive winter crafts and reading holiday books during the week leading up to the break!

Holidays Around the World

Students at The Cooper School participated in Whole School Morning Meetings this week to learn about winter holidays across cultures. Teachers led the meetings with presentations about Christmas, Hanukkah, St. Lucia Day, Las Posadas, Winter Solstice, and Buon Natale’. They specifically learned about the music associated with each holiday.  Students were delighted to make new discoveries about holidays celebrated around the world and were able to make connections amongst the variety of celebrations.
