Happy Halloween!

Reading
Kindergarteners are so busy gaining more and more reading “superpowers” each and every day! Kindergarteners have mastered the routines of Reading Workshop and are thrilled to be meeting with teachers for small group guided reading. Guided reading lessons are tailored to meet the unique needs of readers and give individualized reading instruction. Kindergarteners are revving up their reading “superpowers” to point to and track words as they read. This week, we used Picture Power, which teaches readers to take picture walks through a book prior to reading in order to get a general idea of what will be happening in the book. Picture Power can also help young readers when they come up against an unfamiliar or tricky word.  Students are learning to check the pictures for clues that would make sense. We are also working to apply this new skill to our writing!

Class Jobs
Kindergarteners are well versed in their classroom routines and procedures and are getting comfortable becoming the boss of their classroom in many ways! One of the ways they are building independence in Kindergarten is by taking on classroom jobs and responsibilities. Children will have an opportunity to have each class job throughout the year and learn how to do that job and help their classroom community. Kindergarten friends have done a beautiful job managing our calendar, attendance, light switches, class pet responsibilities, sweeping, line leading, door holding and teacher helping! These kind students know that their hands are for helping!

Pumpkin Presentation
Our classroom was filled with excitement and pride as Kindergarten wrapped up their fun-filled pumpkin unit. Students invited family and friends to our classroom to check out our labeled pumpkin models, pumpkin artwork, pumpkin fact books, as well as the decomposing pumpkin we have been observing. Students capped off the celebration by sharing their pumpkin facts and performing their very informative and exciting Pumpkin Play for a very full audience. Because of the success of our wonderful performance, students took their show on tour and performed their play for the whole school before our Halloween Carnival. We are so proud of our little pumpkins!
