October 28-November 1, 2019
Students had been working on their Halloween Carnival ideas for weeks. On Thursday, they finally got to present their stations to the rest of the school! Students from every grade had a blast going through the “Cave of Doom,” the “Haunted House,” and the “Escape Rooms.” They tested their aim at “Body Part B-Ball” and the “Eyeball Toss,” and then got creative with mask-making, face-painting, and temporary tattoo booths. Students also scored sweet treats at the “Coffin Walk” and at the pie-eating contest! After the festivities, 5th graders were so excited to award the costume contest winners! They were hard decisions, since everyone looked fabulous, but winners were announced for Scariest, Funniest, Most Realistic, Most Beautiful, Most Magical, Best Homemade, and Best Group costume.
In Writing this week, students have chosen their short stories for their Literary Essays. Students will use a variety of short stories by Ralph Fletcher, Jane Yolen, and Cynthia Rylant as mentor texts to grow as writers of literary essays. They will strengthen their creation of thesis statements with an emphasis on evidence and craft. Literary Essays are sure to become a work of art!
In Math this week we have begun our fraction unit! We spent our first lessons in this unit making wonderful connections between fractions and division using real-world problems, mathematical models, and manipulatives. We are looking forward to deepening our number sense with our fraction unit and building on it throughout the year.
