January News !!!

Social Studies

In Social Studies this week our scholars focused on the Great Barrier Reef. Our scholars were able to locate the Great Barrier reef on a map. We learned so many fun facts about the reef. Did you know that the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing on Earth and you can see it from space? The reef is home to fish, sharks, dolphins, turtles, eels, stingrays, octopi, and mollusks, as well as 600 types of colorful coral. Ask your scholar what was their favorite fact about the great barrier reef!

Reading

In Reading we continued our study of Mem Fox and the craft moves she uses in her writing.  Students are becoming experts in identifying examples of onomatopoeia, repetition, dialogue, alliteration, and echo lines.  They have also been able to sort her books into books that feature Australia and those that do not.  We finished our Mem Fox unit with a Reader’s Theater performance of Hattie and the Fox!

Writing

Scholars have been so motivated to write their opinions about their collections!  This week we got the opportunity to look at other students’ collections and decide if we agree or disagree with our classmates’ opinions.  Students chose someone that they disagree with and wrote a counter-argument.  They are learning strategies to use in their writing to really convince their readers!
