Magnificent May!

Kayaking/SUPing

This week we completed our first field trip to James Island County Park for kayaking and paddle boarding lessons. We all had a blast! In the kayaking group, students learned the proper way to get in their boats by using their paddle as a stabilizer. Then, they mastered the sweep stroke and reverse sweep stroke in a game of “sponge”. The paddle boarding group got comfortable on the water by gaining their balance on their knees. When they were ready, they learned the proper leg placement to stand up on the paddle board. It was fun and wet! Ask your child what their favorite part about this field trip was!

ERB Test Prep

This week, we have begun our test preparation for the annual ERB. This is a standardized test that measures grade level achievement in Reading, Writing, and Math. Our focus this week has been on analogies practice and appropriately bubbling in answers. We have reviewed the process of identifying the relationship in the first part of the analogy and applying that relationship to the second part. Some of the relationships commonly seen in analogies are color, size, shape, feel, movement, feelings, part-to-whole, actions, and opposites.

If you would like to help your child at home, I would suggest writing a sentence with punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors and have them correct it!

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Friday was a special day as we had several grandparents and special friends join us for the Book Fair and classroom activities. It was beautiful to see the students interact with everyone else’s special friends as well. In 5th grade, your historians led their special friends in a Morning Meeting, presented their explorers project, and filled out an interesting survey! We are all so excited to finish the day off by performing for Pass It On tonight. Ask your child what their favorite part about today was.
