May We Strive for Success in May

We have so many things to look forward to as the year comes to an end! With that being said, we need to make sure we are planned for the month ahead! Below is a reminder of all of the things that we need to prepare for!

Next Friday is the Middle School Dance! The theme for the dance is Glow in the Dark! Get out those glow sticks and neon shirts! We are looking at a great night ahead!

Starting the following week, we have field trips and ERB testing! Kicking us off, in the week of May 8th, we have the 6th and 7th graders going to Florida and the 5th grade class testing! That following week, the 5th graders will be traveling to G.R.P. while the rest of the grades are testing! To close out the month of May, the 8th graders will be taking their trip to Washington D.C.

Lots of fun things await in our future! It’s best to start the planning now!

Here’s a look at what is happening in each of the classes:

What’s happening in Science?
Seventh graders explored chemistry this week! They learned about atoms, molecules, and compounds, and how the elements in the periodic table make up all the matter here on Earth. They pieced together molecules and compounds using element tiles. Seventh graders also made solutions using water and sodium chloride to compare to the mixture of calcium carbonate and water. They considered how ionic compounds are more likely to dissolve in a solution than stable bonds in molecules. Next week, they will explore more of the fascinating world of chemistry!

What’s up in Math?

This week, mathematicians practiced and completed an assessment on using formulas to solve problems involving 3D figures. They then started some notes and worksheets on the real number system. They are working on mastering the definitions of natural, whole, integers, rational, irrational, and real. I’m looking forward to getting to teach them the Pythagorean Theorem in the upcoming weeks!
What’s happening in ELA?
Seventh graders have completed their research project this week and are in the process of completing their historical fiction final reading project. Seventh graders are also in the middle of Week 16 of grammar and are learning words with the prefixes mid- and post-. They are also learning about words with the suffixes -ess and -ism. We will have a mini-lesson starting next week on “The Art of Argument.” This will just be additional skills added to research skills they have learned and applied in previous lessons.

What’s going on in Social Studies?
Students finished off the Civil War unit before assessing the content on Thursday. Students then moved into their Reconstruction unit! The last unit of the school year!

Students will begin the week by debating which Reconstruction Plan should be used! Students will then move into the new southern society after the Civil War and the aftermath of the Reconstruction. Students will analyze a few of the Jim Crow Laws before being asked to create their own Reconstruction Plan.
