Origami in Fourth!

Photos Below: Fourth Graders celebrated during their after school social by creating origami! As a class we shared designs from various books and watched videos of origami artisans from all over the world!

Compliment Books: In writing this week, Fourth Grade writers dug deep into their compliment books for Valentine’s Day.  At The Cooper School we value inclusion of all students in our holiday celebrations. We celebrate the unique characteristics of each individual student in our cohort.  A celebrated tradition on Valentine’s Day is both writing and receiving a compliment book. Students write personalized letters that include a unique compliment about another student. Teachers compile these special books with all of the collective compliments and we distribute them on Valentine’s Day.

Black History Month- Spotlight: Althea Gibson

As a part of Fourth Grade’s celebration of Black History Month, our class continues to study the biographies of many change making figures. This week our class learned about the life of a talented tennis player named Althea Gibson. As a class, we read aloud Megan Reid’s Althea Gibson: The Story of Tennis’ Fleet-Of-Foot Girl during our Morning Meeting. Althea Gibson was the first black, female tennis player to win Wimbledon two years in a row. She went on to travel the world competing at the highest levels of the sport. Gibson was born and  lived the first years of her life in South Carolina, so our class enjoyed learning of the special connection of this tennis icon!
