Out with the Old, In with the New!

Math

Mathematicians said goodbye to fractions last week and hello to data this week! We began our week in math with a brand new module. Module 6 is all about collecting data, displaying data, and analyzing the data collected. Students kicked off this module by taking a class survey on our favorite colors. Once we collected this data we put it into a tally chart and discovered that more students voted for the color blue and no one voted for orange!

Reading

Readers were delighted to move out of our Test Prep unit and into Fairy Tales! This week, students have been reading different fairy tales in their reading groups to find similarities between them, and identify characteristics that most fairy tales share. Students have also been enjoying hearing different adaptations of fairy tales that we’re familiar with such as The Penguin and the Pea by Janet Perlman. We’ve also started a new read aloud: The Sisters Grimm: The Fairy-Tale Detectives by Michael Buckley.

Writing

We began our Fairy Tale study in writing as well this week. Third Graders have been identifying which features are changed and which features are kept the same in fairy tale adaptations. They’ve even been working on what details they would change or keep if they were to write their own adaptations!
