Math

Third Graders spent the week mastering equivalent fractions. Students used fraction cards as well as their own illustrations to compare fraction sizes. Third Graders began working on their ability to compare fractions using the ‘greater than’, ‘less than’, and ‘equal to’ symbols. Students are so excited to add all of this math knowledge to their current repertoire!

Science

Students began an experiment using seeds this week! On Monday, students created a sprouter to test to see what seeds will do when given the water and sunlight necessary for growth, but not planted in soil. Each day, students have observed and recorded their findings in changes of a popcorn kernel, a sunflower seed, a bush bean, and pea seeds. Each day, the seeds are soaked in water. While observing this experiment, Third Graders moved on to start a new experiment examining water’s effect on seeds. Students weighed five lima beans using a pan balance, and left them to soak in water overnight. After soaking, students used the pan balances to determine how much water the lima beans had soaked up!

Reading/Writing

This week, Third Grade officially kicked off our Poetry study. In Reading, students began looking at examples of all types of poetry. Students have felt inspired by all of the poetry they have gotten their hands on. Using all of their findings, students have begun writing poetry of their own! This week, students looked at connecting their poetry to an emotion.
