This week in math our mathematicians have been learning all about quarters. Second Graders learned different ways to make twenty five cents using numbers and coins. Scholars also practiced skip counting by 1, 2, and 5 on their calculators. Ask you scholar what their favorite part of math was this week!
Elements of Writing
It was full steam ahead as our writers began to assess their own criteria for writing a story. Writers were given a checklist that covered elements of Second Grade level writing and a checklist for Third Grade level writing. They were encouraged to take a deep dive back into their own story and measure what they were already achieving and what they could add in the future. Personal assessment allowed for a holistic review of the areas that they would like to improve, and how they might go about rewriting!
Zoomers and Spinners
Our current unit in Science involves balance, force, spin, and motion. Earlier in the week we made spinning tops. Students discovered that the faster an object spins, the more stable it becomes. We experimented with adding and taking off our plastic discs from the straw shaft. We concluded that the greater the weight, or mass, the more stable our spinners became. Scientists made zoomers with strings and plastic discs. Scientists determined that force was necessary to start a motion.
