Second Grade Stars

Science Centers

In science centers this week Second Graders have been researching what classifies a bird as a bird. They have done this by observing pictures and videos of a wide range of birds from pigeons to peacocks and deciding upon some common characteristics. After drawing some conclusions, Second Graders have made their own paper bird origami and come up with a list of adjectives to describe their birds. They also wrote a scientific response to the question of, “Is a penguin a bird?”, after watching an educational video on the emperor penguin!

Reading

Students have been pushing ahead with their readings and have started the next book in their particular series! We also took a small pause in our reading time to have the Second Graders draw out a particular scene from whichever chapter they enjoyed most. Along with this the Second Graders wrote down a list of words from their chosen chapter that helped them draw their picture. These drawings will be going up on our wall.

Writing

Second Graders combined their learning from science into their writing this week. The students passed around a piece of writing paper and took turns writing questions and the next person in line would write the response. Students practiced writing questions and answers about birds they’ve had encounters with.
