Spring Break is Here!

Wow! We cannot thank everyone enough for joining us for our 2023 Spread the Word. The student’s put in a tremendous amount of work in preparation for this event and it showed in their performances. We were truly impressed and proud of them for their poise on stage and their incredible writing. The rest of the week was wonderful leading up to Spring Break, which is from April 3rd to April 10th. We hope you have a very restful week off and we look forward to getting back afterwards!

Here’s a look at what is happening in each of the classes:

What’s happening in Science?
Sixth graders finished their science comic, Plagues, this week. While reading the book, we discussed how the body is able to defend itself from pathogens with its immune system! They also learned about different types of plagues that have impacted history. They have all selected diseases that have impacted history which they will research and present their information to the class. Lastly, they had a chance to explore some of the new equipment that we got to learn about neurons. They manipulated the neuron “spiker box” to get comfortable with how it works. When we return from Spring Break, we will do hands-on experiments using the “spiker box” to see how the nervous and muscular systems are connected.

What’s up in ELA?
Wow! Amazing authors and presenters can be found in The Cooper Middle School student population. I hope you were proud of your student’s written work and their oral presentations. Pieces that were shared caused me to laugh, while others made me reflect on the world we currently live in. Well done, middle school students!

Sixth graders will focus on finishing up their research papers. They will also begin a new unit titled “Social Issues Book Clubs: Reading for Empathy and Advocacy.”

What’s going on in Math?
This week, sixth graders were able to complete the summative assessment from the Percent Increase and Decrease Unit. Students were able to either use a study guide or perform corrections. With Unit 6 behind us, we are ready to start fresh upon our return from Spring Break. We will be moving into the Rational Numbers Unit. I’m looking forward to switching gears and being able to reason with some foundational number sense. I am hopeful your Spring Breaks are filled with joy and rest!

What’s happening in Social Studies?
Sixth graders dove deep into the Islamic world this week. We dove into the expansion of the Muslim world along with the different achievements and the fall.

Once we get back, the students will be finishing up their unit on the Islamic World before assessing and moving forward. Students will be diving into Southeast Asia once this unit is concluded.
